The hurricane caused massive damage to the Caribbean.
The Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda was swept away by the powerful Hurricane Irma. Prime Minister Gaston Browne said nearly 90 percent of the island of Barbuda had been destroyed by the hurricane, which reached a maximum intensity of five and is believed to be the most powerful in the Atlantic in a decade.
The island was exposed to winds of about 225 miles per hour. As a result, the infrastructure, all the homes were basically destroyed. Up to 90 percent of the homes sustained damage. In a sign of sympathy for the disaster that has befallen the islands, the Honorary Consul of Antigua and Barbuda in Bulgaria, Prof. Ivan Todorov, promptly initiated a donation campaign to raise funds to restore the damage caused by the hurricane.
Prof. Todorov was the first to make a significant donation to the account. More than ever, the people of Antigua and Barbuda need help and support from around the world, the Honorary Consulate said. The donation account (in BGN) where those wishing to contribute can join the initiative is:
