The Honorary Consul of Antigua and Barbuda in Bulgaria – Prof. Todorov gave an interview for Voyage Magazine, in which he shared interesting facts about his first meeting with the island, the travel industry after the pandemic, as well as his diplomatic engagements.

In order to be a consul of a country, it is necessary to have good relations with companies from the respective country, and if the businesses are lasting and successful, this creates trust. Key factor in the institute of the honorary consul is the desire to do something for the country you represent without looking for profit.

Among some of the consul’s main activities is to attract more Bulgarians to the “magnetic places for rest and adventures there.” The island attracts with sun, beaches, crystal clear sea and kind people, and “when somebody goes there once, they repeat“.

Professor Todorov also commented on how, in his opinion, the coronavirus pandemic has affected the travel industry: “The trend is for specialization of supply. Everyone is looking for something different, according to their interests. First of all, travelers are looking for something unusual: authentic people, local food, natural beauty. Second, they are looking for clean and well-arranged accommodation. More people prefer individual villas, which allow them to have direct contact with nature and solitude. Contact with local people in rarely visited places will also be looked for”. He also mentioned that at the time of the interview in Antigua and Barbuda no one was infected from COVID-19, and that no one had died in the last several months. Such places are most suitable for travel during а pandemic.

The Consul of Antugua and Barbuda also shared his personal opinion about traveling to distant destinations: “I prefer not just exotic destinations and tropical islands, but those where there are kind and smiling people. Such a place is Antigua and Barbuda. Others are also French Polynesia, Northeast Bali, New Zealand, and the Great Barrier Reef area of Australia. Beautiful nature is among the important factors for the inner beauty of a person.” Professor Todorov highly values not only the turquoise lagoons with crystal hot water, but most of all he is impressed by people – “the unusual way of life, smiles, care for others”.

Two small points on the map – Antigua and Barbuda. They look like they were lost, somewhere between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean, but are actually nestled among their sisters from the island archipelago of the Smaller Antilles. Gently basking in the sun. They teach us carefree life and harmony. Fun and the ability to enjoy life in a thousand ways. Because it doesn’t matter which borders are closed when there are no limits for the imagination …

They say that in Antigua and Barbuda there is one beach for each day of the year. Therefore, you have no right to be bored. Quiet and isolated bays. Or fun and active areas. Calm, pan-smooth water. Or pushy waves spurred by the ocean wind. Whoever sculpted the coast of this island country has taken care of the most demanding visitor. All you have to do is close your eyes and dream.

With these words begins an interesting article about Antigua and Barbuda in the “Dream Islands” sector in Voyage Magazine. The author mentions that, unlike the neighboring islands, which are formed by powerful volcanic activity, limestone was more involved in the construction of Antigua and Barbuda than lava. On the island, the bright shores are completely natural, and in some parts of Barbuda, the setting sun caresses the tiny shells accumulated over the centuries by the waves and paints amazing pink shades.

In the poetically described article, Voyage not only shares beautiful shots from the island, but also focuses on all the senses with which Antigua and Barbuda provokes the interest of its visitors.

Sense of smell – “The ocean is pushing hard on the northeastern curves of Antigua. It breaks his waves in the rocky shore somewhere in the lowlands. Picks up countless salty drops, with which the wind endures the aroma of the water and the secrets it has hidden in its depths. The splashes dissolve in the air and mix with the scents of flowering plants, enchanting us as we swim in the small pool in front of the white-painted one-story building. But even without human intervention, you can easily find orchids, bougainvillea, exotic climbing plants, coconut palms, papaya, mango, guava… hundreds of bizarre colors and shapes you don’t know”. In Antigua and Barbuda there is time for everything. Nobody is in a hurry. We can easily pamper each of our senses.

Balance – “Although there was no high volcano which rose from the depths of the earth – the highest point of Antigua is just over 400 meters – molten rocks flowed and formed arches, tongues, sheds and caves as they fought an unequal battle with the ocean. Finally, tamed but unbroken, they built a narrow bridge without railings, which we now call the Devil’s Bridge. It is beautiful and magnetic”. One of the most interesting places is the view from Shirley Heights to English Harbor – “The wind ruffles our hair, as if to cool our admiration for the revealed picture. Eyes eagerly soak up the mosaic of blue coves, white yachts, green palm trees, brownish hills, the curves of the coast and the loose clouds that surround the landscape of the English port. This place is a natural refuge from hurricanes.”

Taste – “If you are offered to try “goat’s water”, do not rush to wrinkle your nose in disgust. This local dish does not look like a clear liquid from a horned pet, but like a delicious stew with peppers, cinnamon and other aromatic spices. “Ducana” is a culinary specialty made of sweet potatoes with coconut. “Fungi” is very similar to the popular corn polenta. And if you like spicy meat dishes, try “Pepperpot”.

Vision – “We are approaching the capital St. John’s. Here people, buildings, vehicles, pavilions, shapes and colors, combinations of sounds and pictures – everything is saturated and concentrated. And the little sister Barbuda, whose interior is generally uninhabited, is an attractive piece of land, especially for lovers of flora and fauna.”

Touch – “The first touch cannot be called pleasant. Not so much slimy as slippery. Not so cold, but rather unexpected. Then he gets used to it. We begin to feel it as a playful push from naughty pets. Except they don’t have fur, they are the size of kites and they are in the water. Batoids. A lot. All around us.”

Hearing – “The nightlife is not alien to the island. Bars, dance floors, karaoke … You can even listen to opera music. Under the stars, touring performers from Italy or their diligent local followers will sing for you.”

And because the country of 365 beaches actually turns out to be the country that excites all the senses. Our eyes stare up into the scattered lights of the inky starry sky. Who needs the roulette in the casino when the roulette of the universe is spinning over us!? For billions of years. What else has it prepared for us? What will happen to us?

The full text of the article, as well as recommendations for wonderful places for accommodation at the island, can be found at the file attached.
